150 Years of Gourds in Georgia
Outside of the farmhouse is the water well. The draw bucket, tote pail, dipper, sun hat, birdhouse, and planter are all gourds.
The dolls, wagon and ring toss game are featured gourds. The doll bed, is made of bamboo, tied with raffia, and woven with burlap. The finals on the bed posts are gourds, colored in vegetable cooking water. Rabbit skins cover the dolls, as they do in the off exhibit sleeping area. The cow, after she dried of milk, was eaten, and the skin used to cover the floor. The house was too rural for a school, so Mom educated the children using slate boards when the work day was over.
The farmhouse had no room for cooking, and was also a fire hazard. Therefore cooking and laundry was accomplished over an outdoor fire.
Panels of foam board house insulation were covered with wood print paper to build the house. Screwing the hinges and door lock into the foam created a genuine, "I feel dumb" moment.
